Steps to Clean Install macOS Big Sur 11.0
Step #1: Backup your Mac with Time Machine
Since the clean installation will erase all the data on your existing internal hard drive, it is wise to have a backup of your data. You can use the Clouds such as iCould, Google Drive, Mediafire or use the easier way and backup your data on an external drive via the Time Machine.
Time Machine is a build-in mac utility that allows you to plug your external drive and automatically makes hourly backups for the past 24 hours, daily backups for the past month, and weekly backups for all previous months.
To backup your data via Time Machine, simply open the spotlight and search for Time Machine. Once it is opened select your external drive and backup your data.
Step #2: Downloading macOS 11.0 Big Sur
As i mentioned before the macOS Big Sur is in beta version and only paid developer accounts can download it from Apple Developer Portal. Therefore, if you intend to gain access to developer portal, you can sign up for a developer account and download the latest released of operating systems including macOS and IOS.
If you have a developer account follow the these steps to download macOS Big Sur from developer portal.
- Go to developer.apple.com
- On the top bar, you will see the Discover tab and then select “macOS.”
- Click on Download.
- Create a developer account or sign in with your credentials.
- Once you are signed in, scroll down then select the “Install Profile” button for Big Sur 11.0.
- Big Sur Installation file will be downloaded automatically.

Step #3: Create a Bootable USB installer
If everything is ready until now, the next step is to create macOS Big Sur USB installer. There are multiple ways you can create a bootable USB installer for macOS. For example you can make a bootable USB installer on Windows PC or macintosh computer. Besides, there are different method, but the convenient an easy methods are creating a bootable USB on Terminal or using the third party app called UniBeast.
To make it even more easier for you i am going to show the simplest way to make macOS Big Sur USB installer on terminal within one line of codes.
#1: connect a USB drive with at least 16GB of free space. [USB 3.0 recommended]
#3: Again open the spotlight and search for Disk Utility, and open it too. You can also find the disk utility by going to the Applications folder on your mac then click on Utilities and select Disk Utility.
#4: On Disk Utility windows, select your USB drive form the list and ease it as following.
- Name: macOS Big Sur
- Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
- Scheme: Master Boot Record
#5: The next step is to create macOS Big Sur USB installer, for that launch the spotlight and search for Terminal and open it.
#6: On the terminal windows type the following command, and replace “Untitled” with the name of your own USB drive.
NOTE: Make sure to leave a copy of macOS Big installer in the Application folder, if it is not already there.
sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Beta.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled
#7: Once you pasted the codes, press the return key and enter you administrator password.
#8: At last type the letter ” Y “ on the terminal to agree. And it will start creating a bootable USB installer.
Step #4: Install new macOS Big Sur Beta 11.0
After creating a bootable USB installer, the last step is to install macOS Big Sur on you system. For that connect the bootable USB installer to your mac, and follow the steps below.
#1: Restart your mac and hold down the option key on your keyboard.
#2: It will take you to the boot menu, then select the USB installer drive from the list.
#3: On the Recovery Window, select Disk Utility.
#4: On Disk Utility window, select the start up volume (It normally labeled as Macintosh HD) and erase it as following
- Name: Big Sur
- Format: APFS
Click erase, and the drive will erased in about few seconds.
#5: now quite the disk utility and return to recovery window, then click Install macOS and then choose the installation disk you have already formatted, and macOS will then start installing.
To complete the installation your system may restart several time, so make sure to keep the USB connected.
Basic macOS Account Settings for clean install macOS Big Sur:
- Select Your Country or region and click continue
- Choose a Keyboard Layout, then click continue
- Choose Not Now for the Accessibility.
- Continue with Data and Privacy.
- Choose Set Up Later [you can customize it later]
- Sign in or choose Don’t Sign In. [you can do it later]
- Agree to the Terms and Conditions, then click Continue.
- Choose a Full name, account name, password, and Hint then click Continue.
- Use the Express Set Up, or click continue to skip
- Press Continue for Analytics page.
- On-Screen Time, click Set up Later.
- Finally choose an appearance [light, dark or auto] you want, then click Continue.
To clean install macOS Big Sur 11.0 first you will need to download macOS Big Sur installer from Apple.com, then use the terminal to create bootable USB installer for macOS Big Sur. Once these two steps are download connect the bootable USB drive and proceed with the macOS installation.
