What is VMware Workstation?
A virtual machine is generally a piece of software which allows the user to have more than one operating systems on single physical computer. For example you can run macOS or android OS on a windows pc and linux or you can do the opposites.
There are different virtual machines available with its own unique capabilities and functionalities. VMware is one of the virtual machine which can used for virtualization. It is just like any other software you would run on your desktop. First, you need to create what is called a macOS Big Sur ISO image which in essence is the same type of file macOS users would use to install the Operating System initially. In addition to this, you will have to download VMWare Player itself as an additional Patch Tools file.

Step #2: Download the macOS Big Sur Installer File.
This is the first step needed to begin the installation of macOS Big Sur on VMware on Windows PC. Therefore you will need a macOS Big Sur installer file. The file can be downloaded from the Apple Developer portal.
- On your Mac, visit developer.apple.com.
- Click the “Discover” tab and select “macOS.” Then click on “Download.”
- Sign in with your developer account details if you are prompted. Once on your account, scroll down then click the “Install Profile” button for macOS Beta Install.

Step #3: Download macOS Unlocker.
The macOS Unlocker is a piece of software that allows the Apple ‘s Guest Operating system on VMWare. Therefore, Without this small software you will not be install mac OS on windows or any other operating system.
Step #4: Create a macOS Big Sur ISO File
The macOS Big Sur ISO file or image does not come in Apple App Store. Therefore, you will need to create it by your own self. The procedure to make macOS Big Sur ISO file is an easy and simple process. The first thing you need to do is locate the downloaded files of macOS Big Sur, then move it in the Application directory. in order word move the macIS Beta.App in the Application folder.
The second you must do is to open the Terminal windows and apply the following codes on the terminal sequentially to covert the macOS files to an ISO Image.
After applying the codes correctly, you should see the macOS Big Sur ISO image on your desktop as [BigSur.iso]
# Create a Big Sur Virtual Disk Image
Code: hdiutil create -o /tmp/bigsur -size 10250m -volname bigsur -layout SPUD -fs HFS+J
# Mount this Image to macOS
Code: hdiutil attach /tmp/bigsur.dmg -noverify -mountpoint /Volumes/bigsur
# Use macOS Big Sur Createinstallmedia Tool to create a Installer Image

# Unmount Volume Big Sur
Code: hdiutil eject -force /Volumes/Install\ macOS\ Beta
# Convert the bigsur.dmg to a bigsur.iso for Virtual Machine
Code: hdiutil convert /tmp/bigsur.dmg -format UDTO -o ~/Desktop/bigsur.cdr
# Move and Rename bigsur Image to Desktop
Code: mv ~/Desktop/bigsur.cdr ~/Desktop/bigsur.iso

Step #5. Install VMware Workstation Player 15.1
After you created the ISO image, now move and download the VMware Workstation form its official webpage. Once you downloaded the VMware Workstation, proceed to installation , and the installation is as simple as installing other softwares on windows PC.
However, if you don’t know the VMware installation you may refer to VMware manual or fallow the screen instructions where you will find the step by step guidance.
Step #6: Install macOS Unlocker.
After you installed the VMware workstation, the next important thing is to install macOS Unlocker V3 for VMware Workstation. Therefore, extract the macOS Unlocker V3.0, and right-click on win-install.cmd and select Run as Administrator and this will install the macOS Unlocker for you.
Step #7: Create a macOS Big Sur Virtual Machine on VMware
#1: If everything is ready untill now, the next step is to create a new virtual machine for macOS Big Sur to be installed on Windows PC. Therefore, move to top left option on the VMware workstation and select “create a new virtual machine”. then a wizard windows is going to open. On this window make sure to select the Typical (Recommended) option and click Next to continue further.
#2: Now choose the option I will install the operating system later and click Next. Again select Apple Mac OS X for guest operating system, and macOS 10.16 drop down menu for the version, and click Next.
#3: Moving further, here you will need to name your virtual machine and choose the location where you want it to be stored and then click Next. For the storage space, you can either choose to remain with the default 100GB or increase it. You should select the “Store virtual disk as a single fine” option. After click confirm and finish and your virtual machine is ready.
Step #8: Customize the Virtual Machine
#1: After creating a new virtual machine, the next thing you will need to do is to customize the new virtual machine. First thing fist, go to virtual machine setting, then hardware tab and click on the memory. For the memory [RAM}, choose at least 4GG or 50% of your machines RAM. For example if your system has 32 GB RAM, dedicate 16GB for the virtual machine you created.
#2 Besides the memory that next thing you need to increase is the Processor. Since the macOS Big Sur requires a lot of CPU it is recommended to set the Processor to 80% of your current CPU capabilities.
#3: Move on, select the CD/DVD (SATA) from the list, and click on the Browse button. Now browse through file explorer to locate the “BigSur.iso” file on your system, then click Open. After selecting the macOS Big Sur ISO image, save all the changes click Close.
#4: At least select the USB Controller tab, and set the USB into USB 3.0 Then click “OK”. For your comfort you are good to leave the Sound card and Display settings on Auto detect.
Step #9: Edit the VMX File
There are some of settings which have to be configured in the Virtual machine configuration. You can configure these settings using some essential of code. So, go the location where you saved the macOS Big Sur and enabled the File Name Extension, so you can find the vmx file. If you have not specified the location as we guided you then default location is Document > Virtual Machine.
Right-click on VMX file, and it with Notpad, then Scroll down to the bottom and add the following code.
smbios.reflectHost = "TRUE"
hw.model = "MacBookPro14,3"
board-id = "Mac-551B86E5744E2388"
smc.version = "0"
After that click on File menu and Save the vmx file.
Step #10: Install macOS Big Sur on VMware on Windows 10
If you have done at the steps as i told you, the final step is to install macOS Big Sur on VMware on Windows PC. For that Power on the virtual machine, and wait till the Language window appears, then choose a language you want, and click continue
On the Recovery window select the Disk Utility and click continue
On disk utility window select the VMware Virtual Disk, and click the Erase button to erase the virtual disk. Make sure it should look as following.
- Name: macOS HD
- Format: APFS
- Scheme: GUID Partition Map
Now, quit the Disk Utility, and return to the recovery window, then select Install macOS, then click Continue.
Again, Click Continue.
Agree to terms and Conditions.
Now, choose the available installation disk, and click Install.
NOTE: If you get the Operation Couldn’t be Completed BiErrorDomain Error 3 then use the link here to fix it. It is a common problem when you try to install macOS Big Sur on VMware on Windows 10 PC.
To complete the installation macOS Big Sur will restart several time, and it also may take about 15-20 minutes to finish. Once it is done choose the following options to complete basic macOS account settings.
- Select Your Country or region and click continue
- Choose a Keyboard Layout, then click continue
- Choose Not Now for the Accessibility.
- Continue with Data and Privacy.
- Choose Set Up Later [you can customize later]
- Choose Don’t Sign In. [you can do it later]
- Agree to the Terms and Conditions, then click Continue.
- Choose a Full name, account name, password, and Hint then click Continue.

Step#11: Install VMware Tools
VMware Tools is a pice of software which allows you to fix or change change the resolution of macOS Big Sur and make it more responsive. Therefore, after you did install macOS Big Sur on VMware on Windows PC, download VMware tools from here, then open VMware Workstation, click Player, choose Removable devices then CD/DVD then click Setting and open the “VM Tool.iso” file. Check the connected button and click “OK”.
Moving on to install the VMware tools open the Open Security Preferences, and click allow to enable System Extensions . Once it is done click on the Restart button this will restart your virtual machine.
